They merged inspiration from Terry Riley’s minimalism and the 60’s acid rock, became one of Sweden’s most important prog rock bands, and they’ve inspired bands such as Pavement and Sonic Youth – Träd, Gräs & Stenar is one of Sweden’s most prominent cult bands.
It is with great honor that Jazzhouse can present the legendary, internationally acclaimed and style setting orchestra Träd, Gräs och Stenar, one of the leading experimental rock bands in the world.
The band originated from the project Pärson Sound, one of the most groundbreaking music projects in Scandinavia in terms of using tape loops and drones in rock music. In 1969, the project became a fully formed band with the name of Träd, Gräs och Stenar – with elements of progressive and acid rock, inspiration from Terry Riley and ‘In C’, features from Sun Ra’s cosmic jazz improvisations and German kraut rock, the band achieved a quite unique and interesting sound.
In their original line-up, the band only existed for a few years releasing two albums that, along with their ritualistic live performances, led to cult status and an immerse legacy. Träd, Gräs och Stenar have since reunited on several occasions, one of them being the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in 2004 curated by Stephen Malkmus from Pavements.
Last year, an excessive compilation was released with the band’s original albums, live performances and previously unreleased material, which reawaked interest in the band: “There are parallels, echoes and premonitions of all sorts of bands in the music of Träd, Gräs Och Stenar, from contemporaries like Amon Düül, Popul Vuh and Faust in Germany, the Matrix Tapes-era of New York's Velvet Underground and British psych-folk oddballs like The Incredible String Band, to the more recent emancipated explorations of the 'New Weird America' scene, such as Jackie-O Motherfucker, No-Neck Blues Band, Excepter and the countless psych and freak-folk groups that have thrived in their wake.”, The Quietus.
It is in this context that the renowned cult band will perform at Jazzhouse with their current line-up consisting of Jakob Sjöholm on guitar, Sigge Krantz on bass and Nisse Törnqvist on drums, as well as guitarist Reine Fiske known for the band Dungen.
The Danish act Mythic Sunship will serve as opening act, famous for their long and monolithic acid rock compositions. They describe their music as anaconda rock due to its transcending elements from space-, prog- and stoner rock, that, along with their internationally critically acclaimed album ‘Ouroboros’, has made them one of the most promising bands in the Copenhagen upcoming scene.
