Gadens stemmer (Voices of the streets) - In English
In 2010, Project OUTSIDE (projekt UDENFOR) developed and launched alternative city walking tours called "Poverty Walks". The idea was to make Copenhagen stand out as an inclusive capital, where marginalized people are encouraged to take part in public space. Nowadays the tours go under the name "Gadens Stemmer" (in English: Voices of the Streets), but the concept is still the same.
Through the project, former and currently homeless citizens are given a voice and a chance to present their universe as homeless to fellow citizens, visitors and tourists. The tour participants will be presented to historical and contemporary facts about marginalized people and poverty, to public spaces of high importance for homeless people - such as shelters, stairways, city squares and day centers - and they will hear about the guide's own life story. Our wish is to create a forum, where different citizens can discuss ways of life while expanding their views and opinions regarding social marginalization at the same time. Furthermore, Gadens Stemmer is an example of an empowering social economic activity, where homeless people are able to help themselves succeed. Instead of rejection they can experience appreciation from their fellow citizens.
At the moment, 6 guides are offering guided tours in different parts of the city and some of these are in English. Furthermore, most of the guides are also able to translate their story into English, if you wish to walk in a certain part of the city.
A group tour (max. 20 persons) costs DKK 2.000. We also offer walks for individuals, families and friends. For further information please contact Gadens Stemmer: email@example.com
